Building bridges

Australian Jesuit Fr Jeremy Clarke SJ sees his role as a Jesuit, a teacher and an advocate of culture as the bridge between different communities.  In his two years at Boston College, he has worked to build that bridge – between East and West, between faculty and students.

In the minds of students, he has succeeded.  In May, Fr Jeremy was presented a Momentum Award, the highest award given by Boston College student newspaper The Heights.  Fr Jeremy was the only faculty member to receive this award, which is given to people around the campus who make a significant contribution to the life of the university.  The students awarded it for “closing the cultural gap through accessible research.” He is also one of four finalists from a total of 400 nominations for the “teaching with new media award” given by Boston College.

The award from the student population comes in the wake of the rare book exhibition entitled “Building Friendship: Ricci, China and Jesuit Cultural Learning” curated by Fr Jeremy with the help of two undergraduates Lake Coreth and Caitlin Cain.  Featuring a number of multimedia resources to demonstrate Christian mission history in Asia, the exhibition has been well received since it opened on March 21.   It ends on Oct. 31.
