• John de Brito returns to Madura after revisiting Portugal for 2-3 years.

• Jose de Arce organizes the village of the Presentation of Our Lady (Paraguay).
In a decade, Arce establishes 4 reducciones for 3,000 converts in Paraguay.
• Sao Nicolau, Sao Luiz Gonzaga, Sao Lourenço Martir reducciones in Brazil are founded.
• José de Arce is ordered to find route between Paraguay reducciones and Santa Cruz. Jesuits establish college in Tarija.
• College is established in Tarija, the northernmost outpost of the Jesuits’ sphere of influence in Paraguay.

• Alexander VIII dies. Innocent XII becomes pope.

• San Javier (earliest Bolivia, Chiquitania reducciones) is founded (present-day San Xavier) 10 more follow.

• Edict of Toleration for Christians in China (due to the emperor’s trust and admiration for Ferdinand Verbiest). Chinese Kangxi Emperor permits the Jesuits to freely evangelize.

• John de Brito is martyred (came from Portuguese aristocracy; was able to work with various castes in India).
AMERICAS
• S.G.Peter Joseph Mary Chaumonot dies in Quebec. He spent 53 on the mission in New France. Among the Hurons he was considered another John de Brebeuf.

• Eusebio Kino becomes the first European to enter the Tucson, Arizona basin and create a lasting settlement.

• Anthony Baldinucci is ordained.

• Eusebio Kino (Italian SJ missionary to Mexico) accused of being too superficial in his instructions to the natives, baptizing without much spiritual and intellectual preparation.

• GC XIV (Nov. 19, 1696 to Jan. 16, 1697) – called by Fr. General Tirso Gonzales at the request of Innocent X who asked the Jesuits to have a GC every nine years.
AMERICAS
• Francois Pinet founds the Mission of the Guardian Angel near what is today Chicago, Illinois. The mission would abandoned in 1700 when missionary efforts would seem fruitless.
• Vice-province of Quito (Ecuador) becomes a full Province.
• Second Jesuit Bolivian reducción in Chiquitania, San Rafael de Velasco, founded. Battle of San Xavier results in defeat of Portuguese slave traders by combined force of Jesuit-led Piñocas and Spanish. 10 more follow.

• Simon LeMoyne missionary to New France, whose adventures there were preserved in The Jesuit Relations, dies. For some time was in the company of Brebuf, Jogues, Daniel and Lalemant. In 1946 Jesuit school in Syracuse was started and named it after LeMoyne.
• Antonio Vieira missionary and writer, dies.
• Sao Joao Batista reducciones in Brazil is founded.
• Mission Nuestra Señora de Loreto Concho at Loreto, the first of 23 in Baja California, is established by Fr. Juan Maria Salvatierra.
1698 –
EUROPE
• The Jesuits come to Požega, Croatia and will be there until the Suppression in 1773. They set up a high school (gymnasium) and a college in 1699 (the same year that Antun Kanižlic Jesuit missionary and poet was born in this town).
AMERICAS
• Sta. Rosa de Lima reducciones in Paraguay is established.
• Third Jesuit Bolivian reducción in Chiquitania, San José de los Borós (present-day San José de Chiquitos), founded. 9 more follow.
• S.G. Peter Mayoral (Spanish), one of Chile’s most famous missionaries,arrives in Chile.
