1700

EUROPE
• Innocent XII dies. Clement XI becomes pope.
• Paul Hoste, (mathematician and expert historian on construction of ships and naval warfare) dies.
• By this time (still) 5 German speaking provinces – Lower Rhine (772); Upper Rhine (497); Upper German (1060); Austrian (1772) and Bohemia (1239)
• Province of Lithuania has 716 members.
AMERICAS
• By this year, Kino had established the cities of San Cayetano de Tumacacori, San Javier del Bac, San Cosme de Tucson and San Agustin de Oyaut.

1701

EUROPE
• The old Cathedral of St. Nicholas is pulled down in Ljubljana, Slovenia. A new cathedral is built (from 1701-1706) by the Jesuit architect Andrea Pozzo.
AMERICAS
• The Jesuits establish their residency on the foundation of the old building, almost in ruins, of the old college of Gorjon, also called Santiago de la Paz (est. 1538) in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.

1702

EUROPE
• General Tirso Gonzalez due to ill health and old age (80 years), appoints a vicar Michelangelo Tamburini.
• General Gonzalez tells Clement XI that the doctrine of probabilism would mean the end of the Society.
• The Parish of Pest-Belvaros, Budapest is given to the Jesuits. They will rebuild the Church between 1725 and 1740 in Baroque style. It was made into a mosque earlier during the Turk invasion.
• College and observatory founded in Marseille, France.
AMERICAS
• Father Cipriano Barace, founder of the Mission of Trinidad (Bolivia) is killed by natives and his body thrown into a swamp.

1703

EUROPE
• Death of Francis de la Chaise, confessor to Louis XIV, and a protector of the French church against the Jansenists.
• Aloysius Centurione, (future General), enters the Society.
• Brother Andrea Pozzo, SJ, an architect, painter and sculptor and a master in the quadratura, is invited by the emperor Leopold I to redecorate the University church in Vienna built in 1623-1630. The Church is rededicated to the Assumption of Our Lady.

1704

EUROPE
• Louis Bourdaloue (French Jesuit) preacher at the court of Louis XIV, for 34 years dies.
• Philip Jeningen (Venerable) German Jesuit, dies.
• Jesuit Brother Andrea Pozzo, artist and painter, moves to Vienna on the invitation of Emperor Leopold I.
• Vatican forbids Chinese Catholics to have any part in the ritual practices honoring their ancestors or Confucius.

1705

EUROPE
• Oct – General Tirso Gonzales dies. He was general for 18 years.
• Claude Menestrier, French Jesuit dies. He is famous for his work Ancient and Modern Ballets (one among his more than 150 works), especially in France where ballet had become very important there.

1706

EUROPE
• Jan – GC XV – elects Michelangelo Tamburini as 14th General
As General for 24 years, Tamburini saw the Reducciones in Paraguay grow and become
a model. In one year, during his generalate, no fewer than 77 missionaries left for the
Paraguay missions. But he also was met with much opposition by the Jansenists and the
Paris Foreign Mission Society. The latter attacking the Jesuits on their stand on the Chinese
Rites. During this time, since the attack against the Society on their stand on the Chinese
Rites was strong (Society accused of resisting the orders of the Holy See), General
Tamburini protested energetically.
In 1711 when the procurators of all the provinces of the Society were assembled in Rome,
he had them signed a protest which he dedicated to Clement XI.
During this time also the missionary activities of St. Francis de Geronimo (1715 d.),
Blessed Anthony Baldinucci (1717 d.) in Italy and Venerable Manuel Padial in Spain
enhanced the reputation of the Society.
ASIA
• GJ Kamel (SJ brother) dies in Manila. The camellia flower is named after him.
AMERICAS
• Santissima Trinidad de Paranà (Paraguay reducciones) is founded.
• Santo Angelo reducciones in Brazil is founded.

1707

EUROPE
• Giuseppe Castiglione, Jesuit painter and missionary to China enters the novitiate.
ASIA
• Cardinal Tournon (Apostolic Visitor of the missions in China), forbids the use of the words “Tien” or “Xant” for God and orders the discontinuance by the Christians of the Chinese Rites.

1708

ASIA
• Giovanni Battista Sidatti, Jesuit missionary arrested in Japan.
AMERICAS
• By this year the reducciones had regrouped and 30 pueblos formed the complex known as “The Guarani Republic of the Jesuit State of Paraguay”
• Kino writes autobiographical Favores celestiales.

1709

EUROPE
• Francois de la Chaize (French SJ advisor to King Louis XIV for 34 years) dies.
He was the most renowned of all Jesuit royal confessors, being spiritual advisor to
Louis XIV for 34 years.
• Andrea Pozzo, painter and artist, dies. He decorated the Church of Il Gesu and of San Ignacio in Rome.
